Question by HR: are handheld fabric steamers the same in quality as the base ones?
Are they as good as an iron, what brand is good?

It really depends on what you want to use it for. If you don’t have particularly heavy fabrics upon which you want to remove wrinkles (i.e. they work best for cotton, linens, synthetic blends) then a hand held steamer will work just fine. That being said, however, if you have wool blend suits, heavy upholstery fabrics, draperies, chenille or damasks, no, a hand held steamer just cannot compete to do the job that a base model, tank style steamer can do.
I have both types of units and have had several brands of hand held and water in the tank in a rolling models. I’ve taken my hand held ones on travel trips where they do a wonderful job on light weight fabrics, but often fail on men’s suits or heavy fabrics which I have to send out via hotel service. Plus, more often than not, the hand held units are being used vertically, which means you have to contend with water spurts which cause spotting on garments. That is not also to say that rolling models won’t also do the same thing, the conair in my experience at the lower price points is disappointing on this performance measure as well on sheer draperies steamed while hanging.
For the widest variety of steaming, as well as freshening and cleaning, the base tank models cannot be beat by any hand held model I’ve ever owned. I look for ones that enable me to also use it to steam upholstery, decorative pillows, heavy fabrics, don’t spurt, have large tank capacity, can accommodate vinegar or other cleaning agents to freshen draperies, rugs, cornice boxes, dog bedding, almost any dry clean only item, even patio cushions. But, I still have a hand held model for those quick touch up jobs and like the Rowenta brand on both as compared to any and all of the models I’ve purchased to date.
Overall, rowenta makes fine products in both categories but know for what purpose you are purchasing the unit for. I’ve found their medium price point units for both hand held as well as the rolling models can be used for a wide variety of purposes with great results as compared to other brands of comparable price and amenities.
Plus, that brand seems to have the best warranty, performs the best and most reliably over time and has customer service support better than any of the other brands have had.
